The comic book Judge Dredd appeared in england in 1977, parallel with punk rock and embodying much of the same attitude towards society in general and authority in particular. The title character Judge Dredd is a future lawman whose role is simultaneously that of judge, jury and executioner and who is authorized to mete out justice on the spot (i.e. on the street) with his aptly titled gun "the lawgiver". As an exaggerated take-off on the in many ways already exaggerated Dirty Harry, Judge Dredd becomes the ultimate hysterical authority figure, patrolling a future dystopia imagined in the late seventies but now eerily like our own present.
