Sorry We're Closed will present large format Adobe pieces by Natsuko Uchino.
These raw earth works are made of unfired clay, sand and organic material, inspired and using the same constructive methods as vernacular architecture.
Earth construction is ubiquitous precisely because of its rusticity, it is simply made with the soil from the place where a habitat is built. Currently the moving of earth material is outstanding due to the massive urbanisation and artificialization of grounds and undergrounds in parallel to extractions. This earth ressource is by large obliterated and amassed as trash although earth construction presents many sensual benefits such as hydrometry and insulation in addition to making use of this plentiful by-product.
Natsuko Uchino has worked with earth and clay for over two decades in fields expanding from permaculture to ceramics. The adobe works are a key transformation in her practice as they embody the ecological context while also bringing about questions of permanence. The compositions in these works are made of plants and different layers of earth with their distinctive mineral content and colors, somewhere between a fossil and an herbarium. Natsuko Uchino
